Have a fantastic weekend everyone,

Aya

Aya's poem of the week:

Our clothes are not everyone's cup of tea,

some may say they're too "playful" or too "gutsy".

But its our cup of tea, and we love the taste.

So if you like this tea, then it did not go to waste.

We love to have fun and we love to dress up;

hold your pinkies high, bottoms-up!

MASKS! Yes, we have masks... thanks for asking!

WOW. Okay, let's play catchup really fast.
MASKS are so important and we have two styles at the moment to offer you.

let's get to the masks.

our most popular option is the mask made by our number 1 seamstress, Ying.  Right away she knew that masks were going to be important. I remember saying to her, "we can TRY them out but I am not sure anyone will want a mask." Gosh, how wrong I was!
We are selling these cuties as fast as she can sew them and they are awesome.
Her mask is superior to your usual mask... why? It has 4 layers (most masks are only 2) and the interior layer is organic cotton. It has a pocket to add a filter and elastic ear loops that you can adjust to tighten for a good fit. And of course, Ying picks the cutest prints that we rotate every 10 days.
You need a mask. You need more than one... really two would be the minimum so you always have one clean and ready to go.
I think it is helpful to have different prints per each member of your household so it is very easy to tell who the mask belongs to at a glance.  The adult size is perfect for men and women and she also makes a "youth" size that is good for about 4-10 years old.

Here are some of my favorite prints and a link to the listing online. Let me know if you have any questions about this mask!

We also make a traditional pleated, surgical style mask. These we are offering these in packs of 5 assorted black prints.  I guess we will do this until we run out of cute black cotton!
These masks are 2 layers, with a filter pocket and they tie behind your head which seems nice for extended wear or if you wear glasses or perhaps your ears are sensitive to then ear loops.
These masks are available in one size which is great for adult faces.

With all masks please remember that they are an additional tool for safety and cannot replace common sense and are best coupled with other precautions like Social Distancing, Staying Home when you are sick, washing your hands with soap and hot water and generally avoiding touching your face!
Be safe.

How we got started with masks is sort of interesting... I was home one day not long after deciding to close the store temporarily .. not an easy decision but every place in Portland got on board pretty quickly so it seemed clear it was the right thing to do. Anyway, I got a call from an old friend asking if I could make masks for her husbands business. He worked as a manager at a vitamin factory and they were an "essential" business so staying open. The workers used disposable surgical masks while working but it was immediately clear that hospitals were in need of all available masks so he asked if we could make washable masks for the employees to wear at work! I took him up right away because I was so scared about closing the store and also really wanted to provide some income to my two seamstresses. We agreed to make 1300 masks! It was such a massive undertaking for our tiny production team but it felt good to be helping hospitals get much needed masks and also it was at least some rent money for everyone on my team.

Here are some pix from this big project.

this was the first batch we shipped.. 580 masks! we used materials on hand and got feedback that the workers thought it was fun to have all the cute prints and happy colors!

Whatever it takes, right?
It was so valuable and such a learning experience about mass production. I had never taken on anything that big and the learning curve was kind of steep for me, to be honest. Meanwhile, in the middle of this project we started making and selling so many masks to our customers that our work load went from Zero to 100 overnight and it was actually pretty taxing to get it all done. No regrets! But things changed so fast from day to day in the first few weeks of Shelter in Place.

I am so grateful that we were able to pivot so quickly. It gave me something really good and positive to focus on and got me to the next step.

I love all my follygirls and feel special that I can still be here making clothing in 2020! I knew it was going to be a crazy year but definitely didn't think it was going to be like THIS!

I love you.
Stay safe.

Kicking off Fall with Fade to Light!

We’re really starting to feel some hints of fall in Portland in the last week or so. The light is changing, the wildfire smoke has cleared off of the city, and we’ve finally gotten some sprinkles of rain here and there. We love a season change at Folly, and we were so excited to be able to kick off our fall collection with the semi annual Fade to Light fashion show where we can experiment with new styles and designs.

Sarah Bibb’s collection made an entrance first with a lighthearted short video centering around the idea that bright colors don’t have to die off at the end of summer, and in fact, we should keep vivid fashion around for the often grey and gloomy Portland fall days. Doesn’t that just make sense? Check out the video below!

Her runway collection was full of playful, yet sporty designs aiming to bring a cheerful mood to the start of fall. The first look out was a teal velvet bra and panties set paired with a kimono style jacket in an abstract printed silk organza.

Next out was a hot pink exaggerated turtleneck paired with a black jumper featuring some oversized buttons. This hot pink dress echoed the silhouette featured in the opening video. I love this idea of a neon pink dress in a fall collection! Following this theme, you can expect to find bright solids and prints along with button details in our in-store fall collection!

The next look down the runway was a bright teal hoody paired with a flowy black patterned skirt with a pop of tulle peeking out. This was a fun way to pair a casual sweatshirt with a more feminine skirt to give a unique and playful look. The fabric of the Mina Skirt is one of our favorites this year! Both of these pieces are very versatile and can be mixed and matched to give a more dressy or cozy feel. Stop by the shop to come check out the Audrey Hoody and Mina Skirt!

Another piece from the runway that's now available for you in-store is the Mary Tunic! For the runway, we paired this with some ombre tights, but for every day, this tunic pairs really nicely with some of our Tummy Tuck Leggings. This tunic is a great way to feel cozy and comfortable, but still look cute!

Next up was a teal velvet tank featuring an exaggerated turtleneck and a silver lining paired with a silk organza mid-length circle skirt lined with a golden yellow silk. The silver lining on the tank gave her an intergalactic type of feel, while still feeling very fall being paired with teal and golden hues. This look was so fun and lighthearted, yet sophisticated and sexy! Come check out these ombre tights we have in the shop too!

Following the theme of velvet and extra long turtlenecks, the next look featured a pink velvet tank paired with a black corduroy jumper with oversized red buttons down the front. I love this look, especially how the ombre tights work with the black jumper to create a seamless gradient.

Second to last was a really fun jumper in a black based print paired with a corduroy bow belt. The wide legs of this jumper move really nicely and gave a balance to the more fitted, strapless top. This fabric is gorgeous and has so many beautiful fall colors! Check out this fabric in one of our Fiona dresses available in the shop!

Lastly, the most dressy and festive piece made an entrance! This look was a one shoulder teal velvet dress with a flowy skirt and silk organza lining. We paired this with a corduroy bow belt, ombre mermaid tights, and the most perfect turquoise pumps to create a seamlessly gorgeous look.

A big thank you to Ama Hathaway for these beautiful photos!
We love the idea of having the runway collection inspire the fall collection we have for you in the store! There will definitely be more fun and colorful pieces inspired by elements of Sarah’s Fade to Light collection coming soon, so stay tuned!

Styling Summer Dresses: Dress Them Up for a Wedding & Down for Brunch!

We have so many pretty dresses for these sunny summer days and we want you to be able to get the most mileage out of them so here are some style tips to transform them from dressy to casual in a moments notice! Don’t be afraid to wear that dress that makes you feel glamorous out to Sunday brunch or even to the farmer’s market just by adding a denim jacket, a simple metallic sandal or some cute casual sneakers, and a pair of little stud earrings.

Style the same dress for a more sophisticated event with an Obi belt, a pair of heels, and a longer earring or necklace and you’re on your way just like that! The Pasha and Venus Dresses are so perfect for easy transformations like these! The Fiona is also very friendly for dressing up or down and super lightweight for summer!

Still feeling a little unsure about styling a dress you already have or one of the dresses in our shop? Stop by and we’ll help you mix and match an Obi belt, some jewelry, and give you a little fluff and words of encouragement to help you feel extra confident on your next outing! Life is short! Why not feel your best everywhere you go, even if it’s just to run a few errands? Of course we can dress you for a wedding or gala too, but don’t hesitate to get the most use out of these special dresses.

And as always, send us photos of you out and about looking amazing! We love to post photos of all differently shaped & sized women wearing our pieces on social media, and hopefully you can inspire other women to wear a dress that makes her feel just as fabulous!

See you soon!
